Q: What do you call a guy who hangs around a bunch of musicians? A: A drummer! C'mon, do you really expect to find a drum magazine amongst the clutter of guitar magazines on the music magazine shelf? Of course not! That's because drummers are not musicians! Ask anyone in a band (while the drummer isn't standing around), they're easily the least important member, they have easily the most simple instrument to play, and other than the strong bond of friendship created by being in a band, they could be replaced in a heartbeat. There is no such thing as an "amazing drummer". That's not just my opinion. I mean, anyone can bang on stuff, but to create harmonic, emotive landscapes on a guitar takes talent, much like Randy Holden. Look at Pop. 2; No one, but absolutely no one talks about the drummer on it. Mistake?....I don't think so. Drummer magazines....what a freakin' joke

Why would anybody want to buy a magazine dedicated to drummers unless they were drummers themselves? And, besides, it`s long been known that Whaley doesn`t do interviews. Maybe it`s this prick out of Off-White Trash!

The interview was OK. Got 2 or 3 new insights, but with 2.5 pages of large print how much could you cover? Still...Paul doesn't get interviewed all that much so seeing him in a cool magazine dedicated to classic drummers is a triumph. I'm glad the boys are starting to get their due. Next...I'd like to see an interview with Duck in a guitar magazine. He's got an extensive history covering different genres.

Yeah, the interview was alright, but for me it was more important that Paul and the band were even recognized in a current magazine, and a serious one at that. The target audience of this magazine is not your tattooed and pierced young crowd for the most part, but folks who grew up with these bands and/or folks who are into vintage and custom drums. The word is out that there is a new album and possible tour, so we'll see what happens.....

Thanks for posting the article - hopefully it doesn't raise any copyright concerns, especially since it's a recent publication.
This does raise an interesting idea - would it be appropriate / desirable to start a thread here for posting scans of articles, pictures, record labels and sleeves, or whatever? Mr. Moderator? I have quite a bit that I'd be happy to share...

Hey Mike,
I'm not sure if this raises any copyright issues. The way I figure, a lot of 1%ers have had difficulty locating this magazine and being that interviews with Paul are rare enough, I figured that it would be ok to give the people what they need. The band needs all the publicity we can help with so I'm for leaving the article up for now.
I know that this thing is still technically on sale but then again, lots of record companies (and a few former band members) never seemed to care about BC's intellectual property. If Classic Drummer has a problem with this, we can always delete the post.
As for posting past articles and other things already long out of circulation, I say go full speed ahead. We'd all be interested to see what you have to share.
Thanks,
Ken

I do believe that the intention is what is critical in copy write issues. If no commercial use is intended then there is no copy write infringement . Credit should be given to the originator and holder of the copy write.

Well the writer's name & email address is listed in the article and this board is not charging for download so I guess we are good. If anything, we are helping the magazine not only by advertising it here, but also we included an ad of one of their clients thus, helping them do their job!

Thanks so much for posting the article on Paul - it's great to see him getting a micron of the kudos that he so richly deserves. OUTSIDEINSIDE has some of the most insane drumming of all time and he still is great live. I think many people in the music world think Paul is a washed-up drunk with a mouth full of marbles. This interview proves that he knows his craft and is very articulate, of course we all knew that .

Paul Whaley is one amazing person. Paul Whaley SR. his father was a drummer and for years driving up highway 80 towards Sacramento on the right about Fairfield a small white Bar, club had on the sign Paul Whaley Trio,. We are talking late 50's into mid sixties. When Paul would go outside he would have lines , literally about ten people follow him wherever he went , mostly men with very long hair . Also I remember going to his bedroom early morning and before he even got out of bed he had his room full of admirers in his room wanting him to get up and go outside for the Paul Whaley Parade. Youthful good looks and confidence to burn he just attracted people every where he went . Truly amazing dude. Usually he had a steady girlfriend and always they were a knockout and usually very bright . Janis Joplin loved Paul to death and he is mentioned in several books about Janis . She stayed with us often in Novato , Ca. Linda Eastman was another one who fell in love with Paul big time and went on the road with us for about a month in 1968. She debated going to see Paul McCartney or staying with Whaley? ?? Paul was so good as a drummer that other drummers were intimidated by him and other musicians as well and one of the reasons I believe that Blue Cheer was swept aside in the hip culture in San Francisco at the time. Paul more than the others was unapproachable in many ways as his talents exceeded his grasp on what was happening to him. Paul is also one of the smartest intuitive people I have known and had an ability to "Sus " people out in a big hurry---mostly woman ! Caring to a fault he endeared himself to most people he met . Paul without a doubt was the musical director of Blue Cheer in a most subtle way never really hammering on anyone just making it impossible to continue in a direction he did not approve. Paul has a spirit side to him as a few years ago I asked him how he felt about Jerry Russell's passing and if he would have liked to be there . He said , "Jerry and me had a special relationship and were with each other all of the time even though separated by 1000's of miles". Paul and Jerry were tight tight tight. I can honestly say that Paul had more charisma than any of the great stars that I met including Janis , Jimi, Lennon , Garcia. A remarkable man , a great friend and truly one of a kind genius on the drums . I am thrilled about the article in Classic Drummer. thank you Feedbacklord for posting . You do a great job here . Cheers , Eric
