Has anyone realized that this month marks the 40th anniversary when that slab of nasty, beastly but beautiful noise known as "Vincebus Eruptum" was released? A monumental occasion indeed!!
For me personally, I prefer "Outside Inside", but there is no denying Blue Cheer's mighty debut, the likes of which have rarely been matched (And, they did it WITHOUT Randy-Take that FPL!!). My only regret with this L.P. is that it's too short! But, that's part of it's charm, innit? It just gets in there, grabs you by the throat, then leaves you wondering what the hell happened. This is proof positive that great albums don't have to be an hour long.
My introduction to BC came via their compilation album "Louder than God!" in late '86, and was hooked immediately. Yes, I liked the 2 tracks from the 4th album, and even liked the 2 Randy tracks, but the first 8 tracks is when I knew something was different here, something sinister and dangerous, especially for it's time. My quest to find out more about this band was on! Of course, I learned to appreciate the later Phillips albums, as it was still quality music, but music doesn't have to be perfect to be good, and I think the first 2 BC albums, especially VE, shows this. I clearly remember a friend of mine in the 80's who was into ALOT of heavy music (As well as mind-altering substances, but we won't go there!!) and one of the albums he always had left out for display was VE. The "Raised" cover effects was definitely an eye catcher (And to think I found a copy of this in a record store about 10 years ago for a buck!). To me, VE is BC's "Sun Sessions".
So, share your experiences, because this album is most people's introduction to the mighty thunder that is BLUE CHEER!!!
