I grew up in the L A area back in the 60's. Blue Cheer at that time was just a rumor, very loud band, very good, but who knew? it wasn't until high school that i started really paying attention, actually managing bands, and listening to the harder edgier angrier. completely planning to be at the Oklahoma city show and encouragging everyone i know to attend. if hearing you guys once is an event, hearing you now is a lifetime event.

Hey, hey found a video of Dickie, Leigh and Prairie Prince at the CHET HELMS TRIBAL STOMP. Leigh sounds HOT ... a friend of mine is a friend of Wavy Gravy ... and he told me that Dickie and Leigh rehearsed only 1 day (or 1 time, I don't remember) for this gig due to schedule conflicts ... so after 30 years of course it won't have the same edge but I say Leigh still has it. * here's this ... and if it only comes out HTML here's the link video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8818743375115105440Welcome nasaldave ... OLD GUYS RULE

Leigh sounds good but not Blue Cheerlike. I think Duck blows him away!

I love the Leigh Stephens of 1968 however after hearing what Leigh sounds like now isn't remotely near to his sound back in the day therefore I don't think he could fit with the band today,...and I agree with old hippie man about Duck - Duck is what Leigh would have evolved to had he been playing with the same fire and energy as he once did in '68,..FBL was there and saw the whole performance and he'll tell you first hand that the (Chet fest performance) was a one man show being that Dickie carried that whole performance Leigh had his back or was turning to the side of the stage and basically was laying low during the performance,.......I think Leigh is a good guitarist & is a much more bluesier player these days he just isn't the guy for BC anymore

Despite how this video sounds, standing in front of the stage the only thing you could really hear well was Dickie's bass & vocals. Leigh DOES NOT have it anymore. He didn't even turn up his volume at all and must have done the shortest rendition of Dr. Please ever recorded. Shit..Cream ripped it up more at their lame reunion show. 'Nuff said!

I listened to Chronic with a K`s `Ride the Thunder` album recently and it is totally the other side of the coin to what he was playing with Blue Cheer. It`s the complete definition of going from the sublime to the ridiculous, not that Leigh was playing anything remotely close to sublime back in those days.

Oh, please. Leigh is 1/3 of a trio that re-defined music. In all due respect for those who were there, it's totally off the wall to compare Leigh, who has not played that style of music for , what, 30+ years, to Duck who lives and breaths it now. Why put down one guy to extol the virtues of another? One thing for skippy damn certain, and that is come R & R Hall of Fame day, Leigh will be inducted as the original BC guitarist and hopefully Duck will be as well. Ya know, if you ever want to see that reunion gig, best not to slam the one guy who still has not agreed to do it. This is not to say I feel Leigh is "Better" or that Duck is. Hell, to have three truly awesome guitarists ... Leigh, Tony, and Duck, as well as some totally cool guys like Didi is a very great statement of the BC legacy.
*So anyway, cool video, heh?

It's not bad. Better than the 1 minute video that I've seen of the gig about a year ago.

wholelottashakin,
One thing that maybe you don't know (as well as a lot of others I guess) is that there was talk of a reunion of the the original trio and, after years of being asked, Leigh was on board to do it. Then that got blown out of the water when Leigh started in making his egotistical demands, most notably that a certain other original member NOT be included in the reunion as well. Needless to say, he was told where to go.
AND just for the record, the reason there was but one rehearsal for Chetfest had nothing to do with scheduling problems..more a case of Leigh not being bothered enough to rehearse more (they almost added the Hunter to the set). I guess he figured this stuff was "too basic" to require much practice.
