Tonight Blue Cheese Posted by Mike Nipper on February 13 at 10:41 AM WOW. So sad, SO bad. I heard that new Blue Cheese…yeah yeah yeah… Blue CHEER record. Yuck. It’s bad metal…it’s embarrassing, it’s so bad. Like, it’s dumb, but not like dumb as dumb rock can be brilliant. However, Dickie DOES still have his voice, and there is the occasional hint of BC’s former glory…but it’s all metal, not heavy, but metal. Still tho’, if I HAFTA find a bright spot in terms of “cool they’re still doing IT”…it’s not worse than that Stooges reunion record. Line Out - lineout.thestranger.com/

bad metal??? What is this guy talkin about? Blue Cheer is not a metal band. They do not play metal. Their new disk could be compared to grunge but not metal. Not to say that metal fans wouldn't appreciate the disk. But you can't compare the music to metal and certainly not speed metal. I hear some influences from grunge, namely Alice in Chains on the new disk. And most listeners would too. This is mainly a revivalist heavy rock record. I use the term revivalist for lack of any existing terms. Blue Cheer has played a long time and they started up long ago. They play music the way it was played back then with influence from more modern sounds and equipment and recording techniques. There is more melody now and they still stretch out in instrumental passages. They still boast the heavy rythym section as supplied by Sirs Whaley and Peterson. Some of the new tunes are actually jazzed up. One can hear Sir MacDonald providing rythym and lead guitar, which is different from the original line up. I don't remember Sir Leigh Stephens playing rythym guitar. The new music calls to mind the days when music by Cream, Deep Purple, Blind Faith roamed free over the airwaves.....not a bad thing....not a bad thing at all...

It turns out that Mike Nipper is also Festooned Piglips AKA Randy Holden AKA RobbNoxious (Yes! He interviewed himself and then sold bootlegs of it). You can read all about it in the latest blog on my Myspace website.
