English rock journalist and archiver, Colin Hill, had, in 1983, had it drawn to his attention that there was an American called Paul Whaley working in a baker`s shop in Cornwall, England, and Colin went to check him out to find that it was, indeed, our Paul Whaley. Colin knew how to get in touch with Dickie, and Dickie came over to be reunited with Paul again. When Dickie went to Germany, he wanted both Paul and Tony to join him there, but it seems that Tony had an abject fear of flying, which is why he didn`t go, although he nearly had Paul convinced that `planes crash!!, as I was told.

so is the band flying under the radar because paul is still on shaky ground legally, or is it, hopefully, all cleared up now (after all it's over 20 years later now)? so when the bigger gigs get offered they can ALL play at them? i would guess this puts another slant on the "paul w" guy in staten island, who could definitely confuse the authorities on this issue....for awhile anyway...might be doing the band a favour, as it turns out!

Another Dickie and Tony connection returned to my memory ... this past summer, the Russian River Blues Festival featured Little Richard, Elvin Bishop AND Buddy Guy so you can image that the event was a huge sell-out. 'Course, it is every year but since some of my favorites were there ... well, whatever * Whilst walking towards the car my friends and I heard the most amazing, LOUD blues/rock sound coming out of a local bar. We noticed a rather large amount of people heading towards the sounds and decided to do likewise. The place was so packed it was absolutely impossible to get in the door ... the air was electric!, people were dancing in the parking lot, calling on their cell phones for friends to stop by ... we couldn't even see the band but hug out for an entire set. Finally, when I was able to hear myself talk, I asked who the band was, and having never heard of MOTHER OCEAN, I just nodded in appreciation. It turns out that inside was Tony Rainier, Dickie Peterson and a drummer, just cookin'. Dickie had to leave early due to some reason I never knew and there was no way to catch his attention as he walked by, but mahn! were they hot. Some of the best blues/rock I've ever heard out of anyone anywhere. There were about 300 people who would definitely agree with me. * *Hope to hear more of that sound ...
