My post regarding the review of the new BC album (Where I mentioned Dickie's solo album) got me thinking; How come this album doesn't come up much? Yes, I know they were done for contractual reasons, but would anyone really disagree when I say that Dickie's album is more of a BC album than the last 2 Phillips albums? I mean, Dickie's band on his solo album is a 3-piece and has his distinctive vocals, something those last few albums didn't hardly have. Don't get me wrong; I am a fan of those albums. It's just that, I don't hear much about COTD much. Heck, I could even hear Blue Cheer doing "Brainkiller", "Dogs Of war" or "Back On The Streets" live. I wonder why this was never persued? Even the soing "Child Of The Darkness" was originally a BC song. And don't even mention that the group on his album contains no other members of BC. With all due respect to Duck and the songs they selected, put on "Blitzkrieg Over Nuremberg" against COTD, and tell me which sounds closer to BC in style, content and volume. So, am I alone if believing that this is a great BC album in disguise?

Thank you for bringing this album up, Poopypants (I miss your old handle). I was just thinking about writing about it myself and yes, I too believe that this is one of the better BC-related releases and could definitely have been a BC album. I think the reworking of the title track sounds more like BC than the BC version and this, like What Doesn't Kill You, is a solid album all the way thru, and Dickie doesn't even play bass on it!!! It's very heavy & very trippy, especially BrainKiller & Dragon Song. Don't forget the tune Reptile. That is a bit unusual for Dickie and another classic, just like Back On the Street. I am surprised BC hasn't done this version of Spoonfull live. It sounds like it could've come from HL&LL. You are not alone brother...

Dickie`s `Child of the Darkness` album was recorded with the guys who formed the original Mother Ocean out of Cologne, Germany - local musicians whom he played with over a number of years whilst out there. All these guys were familiar to Didi Saller. Didi told me that they all stayed at Ralph Schmitter`s house one time, when he went up to Cologne with Dickie. When Didi was with the band, they did two tours of Germany and Austria. On the first tour, Paul played drums, but on the second tour it was Gary Holland. After `Dining with the Sharks` had been toured twice, Didi went off to New York for a year and stayed with Dave Salce, who, prior to `Blitzkreig`, had been the drummer in Chuck Berry`s backing band. When they were rehearsing the second tour with Gary Holland, Dave Salce was still a frequent visitor, even though his time with Blue Cheer seemed to be confined to that one album. I think `Child of the Darkness` would definitely have been a Blue Cheer album if not for the fact that he couldn`t use the name because of contractual differences with his former label, Nebelling. Similarly the `Tramp` album would probably also fall under the same category.
