I'm glad to be able to share it. I've been fortunate to have other collectors share their stuff with me over the years, usually as photocopies. Thanks to all of those folks who aren't currently involved with this group, especially Bob Stalvey (Wisconsin) and Bill Baxter (Texas).
I just spoke to Bob last night and he's hoping to see them in Milwaukee next month - he's never had the chance to see them before. I've corresponded with him since 1975 when he Xeroxed his scrapbook and turned me on to the Kak, Mint Tattoo, and Population II albums and the Steve Allen Show audio tape.

No, not at all, brother. I think it's pretty cool. I live in the Midwest, and I haven't seen too many long-haired asian guys like that one, and it's pretty cool to see that there were some back in the day, and that one was actually involved in Blue Cheer! One can only imagine how much the counter-culture would have rubbed off on the local asian community in the bay area, and apparantely it did, with the picture of that guy.
Nothin' but love...

I picked up the Ethan Russell book "Dear Mr Fantasy" a couple years ago in Portland. There are several pictures of the 6 piece band in the book. One shows them practicing in a basement before Whaley joined, the drummer must have been Alowicous Merriwether that Eric speaks of. There is another picture of them with a Hells Angel on his bike. I'd scan them and post but I dont have a scanner.

I ran into a guy who said that he supposedly had video footage of BC in 1966 and I asked him if the band were a six piece or three piece but he couldn’t give me an answer on that I them asked him was it the Beat Club and he said that it wasn’t because many think that the Beat Club footage is rare footage,…he was supposed to get back to me on it never did I think he was mistaken on the footage that he had. He also said that that particular footage was in England and I questioned him if he was sure it was from 1966,…unless there was footage filmed of them performing in 1966 that ended up being shown on some BBC channel,…Eric you might have insight on that but from what I understand BC didn’t play in England until Randy joined in late 1968,…perhaps this guy had footage of Randy w/ BC ? I won’t know the guy never got back to me to confirm what he had I personally think it was the Beat Club footage and he may have thought it was something rare that he had

Mr. Maltese ----as a six piece BC played few gigs --I have never known of any films being made of them as a six piece ----the only possible one would have been their first gig with Tim Leary and Richard Alpert (Ram Dass) at Winterland in San Francisco 1966 or 67. As a six piece they never went to England ------ Vale Hamanaka is the Asian Gentleman who played with BC, Hammond B3 with Leslie Speakers. He would sometimes play with the speakers off because you could not hear him anyway. He had a long standing relationship with City Lights Bookstore , owned by Lawrence Ferlinghetti where Vale worked for many years. I know of only the video on MTV made in Germany after Leigh left the band. Tell me what and when was the Beat Club and where is it??Thanks , Eric I did a spell check

Eric,
The Beat Club is the Summertime Blues with Randy Holden playing guitar and them lipsynching to the song in the video,...that's already on You Tube and all sorts,...
You have never seen The Steve Allen footage or know of anyone who may have that? I still say if there's audio of it someone or somewhere must be the video footage of it - maybe one day it'll surface

When I finally obtained a copy of the American Bandstand appearance the man in charge of the archives for Dick Clark Productions has been in the background of Los Angeles TV production for many years-many years. He validated my earlier research and told me that the tapes of the Steve Allen Show that I asked for were destroyed . He did not give me any details and as a matter of fact quickly changed the subject. I was present when they filmed the show for Steve Allen and was actually in the footage myself along with Jerry Russell---Steve Allen referred to us as Cuban refugees and the camera caught us leaning against the back door of the studio---we did look a bit like Cubans ---see picture of BC on the space merry go round on 2 nd. album cover but I never saw the completed film except for the show on TV----they did not have video cassettes way back then. Cheers , Eric

While poking around in the newspaper archives, I came across TV listings for the Steve Allen Show with BC aired on a variety of days in different cities at least through February of 1969. Does that indicate that each station had its own copy? If so, that would increase the possibility that it still might exist somewhere.
Does anyone remember seeing them on the Joe Pyne Show? I never did, but I've read that Joe asked Dickie why he was laughing all through the interview, to which Dickie replied "Because I'm tripping, man." Fact or just another great BC legend?
