Mike, you are the man! This is priceless! Finally after all these years I get to see how they had things set up for recording on the pier. These are the first photos I've seen that show all the stacks together. I cannot even imagine how this must have been in '67-'68 when the majority of bands were using Fender amps the size of a suitcase. Granted in todays world of mega PA systems the SPL may be numerically higher but for sheer visual impact not to mention fullness of sound this had to be something. As best I can tell it looks like Leigh was using the tremolo model Marshall Plexi heads as they look to be 8 knob control panels. I had always wondered how Leigh achieved his tone on the first record. But taking into consideration he used a fuzz face with the level control dimed and the fuzz/distortion at zero he overdrove the front end of the amps conbined with what may have been 15 watt Celestion speakers they used then and all the amp head controls maxed its no wonder. Combine all this with his out of control playing style and its pure sonic bliss. Its a wonder the speakers didn't disintegrate but they probably did as thats like what you're hearing on that record.
Anyone else ever notice that the few live pictures I've seen of them playing that Leigh stood next to his stacks off to the side? All except the picture Gut took of them in the gate fold of OutsideInside.
Mike, thanks again for sharing all these from your collection.
Scott

You're most welcome. Eric can confirm this, but I think they used Fender amps (Showman?) when recording "Vincebus Eruptum".

We had just purchased the Marshall"s so we could record with them. So the Marshall's were used on BC 1

Talk about 'young lions in paradise' - what a great photo document, thanks so much for posting stuff from your collection, Mike.
It's these tyes of contributions along with Eric's recollections that make this board the best!
See you at the Kyber on November 7th, FBL?

I'll be at the Khyber gig. Maybe this time we'll meet. Mike, Blue Cheer used the Fender Showmen when they recorded the first demo, not Vincebus. I know this because I actually saw pictures of this historic moment. It would be cool if everyone here could see them but unfortunately the guy who showed them to me is being a tightwad about it, as if having them all to himself is some kind of status symbol. Maybe Doug can convince him to donate them to his site

I have a photocopy of the proofsheets from that session, and at one time I tried to scan all of the pictures for Eric. I'll try posting some of the better ones here soon.
That's where I saw them using the Fenders, but I couldn't remember whether that was the demo or VE session.
