Did the guys ever bring it! I had not seen them since they were in town in 1984 recording "The Beast is Back" at MusicAmerica Studios.
The Bug Jar is a smaller place but with a very good atmosphere. I have seen a lot of bands there but I have never seen it as packed as it was last Thursday night. A very diverse crowd of all ages.
I got there early and managed to talk to Dickie for a while and introduced him to the next generation of Blue Cheer fan my 17 year old daughter who plays bass. I went outside for a smoke and talked to Paul for a little bit about when they were in town in 84. He remembered playing the local clubs back then.
The Teenage Junkies opened playing Stooges and Dead Boys covers. They brought a big punk crowd. Then St. Phillips Escalator were a retro psych band. When the Cheer came on I was what seemed like 6" from Duck as he played. It is a small stage less than waist high. I bore the full brunt of his 2 Marshall heads through 3 Peavey 4 X12 cabs. Dickie was using an Ampeg head through a 2 X15 cab with EV speakers and a 4 X 12. He also had what looked like a vintage SVT running an Ampeg 8 X 10.
Needless to say they really filled this little place with sound. Dickies voice was spot on. Paul played with a lot of energy and impressed with his solo. The crowd went nuts and was really into them and this had a real effect on the band and they played off the energy.
I heard one voice shout out that they were the best thing to ever happen to the Bug Jar.
Duck being from Auburn NY which is between Rochester and Syracuse. I wanted to talk to him but it was so crowded that it was difficult to after the show. My daughter and I did manage to have our picture taken with Dickie. He is most definately a prince of a man.
I consider myself very lucky to have seen them twice in my life. If they come near you DO NOT pass up the chance to experience them.
