Originally managed by the Hell’s Angels and deemed as “The single most powerful band I’ve ever seen” by Jim Morrison of The Doors, one of heavy metal’s original “power trios” BLUE CHEER are on tour in support of it first new studio album in over a decade, “What Doesn’t Kill You…” (Rainman Records via Shout Factory/RED Distribution).

Formed in San Francisco, the legendary heavy metal pioneers blew up with its full-on heavy metal version of “Summertime Blues” from the band’s seminal 1967 album, “Vincibus Eruptum.” Pitchforkmedia.com recently wrote that, “The Who ripped these guys off!”

Named after a brand of LSD, BLUE CHEER made a name for themselves as the first heavy metal band to be universally called: “The loudest band in the world.” They are hailed as the fathers of metal, the godfathers of grunge as well as garage gods.

BLUE CHEER in the past couple years have been actively touring Europe and America with the likes of Witch (featuring J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr) and Goblin Cock as well as at last year’s Vice’s 2006 Intonation Festival (alongside Ghostface Killah and High On Fire) and the CMJ Music Marathon. This past spring they performed at the Roadburn Festival in Holland with The Melvins, Pelican and Neurosis. They are currently on a U.S. headlining club tour.

The acclaimed current lineup includes 2/3 of the original trio with Dickie Peterson on lead vocals and bass and Paul Whaley on drums. The two are joined by Duck McDonald on guitar who has been a member with the band on and off throughout the past 20 years. BLUE CHEER has earned rave reviews on the road on recent tours for still “bringing on the sonic assault.” Rolling Stone magazine’s David Fricke states: “ The terror is back.” “Most critics point to Sabbath and Zeppelin as influences for current metal bands such as Wolfmother and Mastodon, but Blue Cheer’s unrelenting rawness, interesting use of distortion and love of the blues has as much to do with those sounds as anyone else,” praises Columbus Alive.

“The band right now blows my mind,” laughs BLUE CHEER’s Dickie Peterson. With BLUE CHEER you have to go see it! It is a physical experience. I want people to leave saying I’ve never seen anything like that before. You can feel it. It punches you!”

South by Southwest, that music, movies and technology extravaganza, descends on Austin again beginning Friday. It is 10 days of events that will make your head swim trying to take it all in.

Now in its 21st year, SXSW has grown gargantuan. What began as the weekly alternative Austin Chronicle’s showcase for live music, where record company executives and A&R men could troll for unheralded acts to sign, has expanded into a worldwide phenomenon.

Hey, how about I give some ideas for promoting the band....providing of course that you do all the work and I`ll take the credit for it.

I heard a rumour that on DirectTV , the ENTIRE SWSX will be televised! Anyone who has this kind of cable hookup will be able to see the show. I haven't had the time to find out more details but thought I'd give y'all a heads up. Here's a possible chance to get yourself some "quality" live video of the band (assuming their set is broadcast). Hell..we can even donate it to the website...

..Merle Robillard/National PostCrystal Castle’s Alice Glass at a Toronto show in February. The Canadian act played a packed show at the SXSW festival this week in Austin, Tex.
AUSTIN, Tex. -- A long, long time ago, when grandparents were long-haired and draft dodgers were running across the Canadian border seeking asylum rather than in a posting in some miserable corner of the Vietnamese jungle, a band named after a particularly intense brand of LSD emerged in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury scene.

But Blue Cheer weren’t your typical brand of long-haired-love-’em-all-and-let-whatever-god-or-not-you-choose-or-don’t-choose-to-believe-in-sort-’em-out kind of band. Oh no.

They were a power trio. One that, as Iggy Pop so distinctly describes it, "heard the whole hippie thing differently" and sought out sonic avenues to release pent-up aggression. The trio’s version of Summertime Blues is credited as one of the very first heavy metal singles and the 1967 album Vincibus Eruptum as one of the first heavy metal albums. Toss in the rumour that they were managed by the Hells Angels motorcycle enthusiasts organization and you’ve got the complete rebel-with-an amp-that-goes-to-11 template that still informs the metal genre.

Last night, the Cheer showcased its classics and new songs from its first new album in over a decade. What Doesn’t Kill You . . . (Rainman Records via Shout Factory/RED Distribution) doesn’t mess with the over-amped acid blues the band specializes in one bit either. WIth original drummer Paul Whaley and singer/bassist Dickie Peterson as well as longtime guitar slinger Duck McDonald, the trio packed out Emo’s Annex, the entire street outside the fence and could be heard clearly over the din of all the other clubs on 6th Street.

Dude, this was heaviosity at its most primal. Peterson still sings like someone possessed by the spirit of a dead, and very agitated, bluesman and the group’s ability to do so much with so little had countless band members in the audience taking notes.

Plus, these guys look like they could still take on the audience. And they still draw a healthy crowd of Harley lovers.

The Cheer came after a sizzling show by LA punk/roots progenitors X, who also played as though they were still a regular touring act making records. Aside from the fact that Exene Cervenka looks like my Grade 12 lit teacher now, the rest of the band has changed little. Heck, guitarist Billy Zoom still pastes that silly surfer grin on his face and makes ripping out those sledgehammer rockabilly riffs look too easy by half. Among the audience members singing along to every song in the group’s brilliant set: Moby, members of High On Fire, My Morning Jacket, someone who looked an awful lot like Kate Nash and so on.


As for other acts of the evening:


- Toronto’s Crystal Castles proved itself to an adoring fanbase at a fully sold out Emo’s Main Room show. I expect it will be plastered all over YouTube given all the active phone and camera action at the strobe-light heavy gig.


- Look out for the coming CD by Langhorne Slim on Red Music if you are a fan of swinging steamboat Dixieland singer-songwriting. Hard to classify his sound with an upright bass, trumpet, drums and guitar working acoustically but totally rocking.


- . . . and the Eye Candy of the Festival award goes to the hyperkinetic back-up singers of The High Class Elite. A band decked out in gold lamée, the two female singers were wearing impossibly skimpy mini-dresses and grinding their barely covered posteriors against the huge windows behind the stage corner at the Thirsty Nickel. This was rock 'n’ roll marketing at its most primitive, and it worked wonders. While the group has some serious flaws in terms of staying in key and metre, plus less-than-great songs, it put its talent to work roping in gawkers and packed the club and the outside corner. I personally loved all the guys running up to the window to have their pictures taken next to the gyrating heinies.


- Earlier in the day the Shout Out Louds proved that the fine line between sounding like your influences or being a mimic can be crossed. The show at the Cedar Street Courtyard daytime Fader Magazine party listed "special guest" in the roster and one out-of-breath, very drunk for mid-afternoon fella was convinced it was the Cure’s Robert Smith singing on stage. He was less happy to discover it wasn’t. So much so that he was escorted away for expressing his opinion. I kinda agreed with him.


- At the MINT Records showcase, Vancouver’s poppy Bella put on a fine set to an empty room. It happens. The trio had a wonderful reception at its other shows, but something about Club 115’s location off the beaten track didn’t work out. Except for the Pack AD, whose set was, well, packed.


It all comes to a close tomorrow with the biggest day of the entire festival. Parties start as breakfast taco and morning after margaritas sessions as early as 9 a.m. and there are all-day free shows with NoFx, the Breeders, Black Mountain, David Cross, Janeane Garofalo and the whole Comedy Death Ray troupe and much more. Hopefully, it won’t be in the 40s again with people melting and wilting in the blazing Texas sun. Mid-30s maybe.

The show at the Emo's annex tent was awesome! I've been a fan for a long time, but have never seen them live. Duck McDonald really brings the classic blue cheer guitar sound and energy back to the band, and you know that Paul and Dickie are still rocking just as fucking hard as they ever have; it was just amazingly great to see them still doing it at that intensity after 40 years. Paul gave me his drum stick, and each member of the band took the time to talk with myself and the other fans after the show.

Primal rock and roll done with integrity and passion.

well the last thing i expected to be doing last week was SXSW but as it happened i got asked down to visit with some old music friends so i made a point of getting to the high times party and it was just that, VERY high times. the cheer were BRILLIANT, short set but as good as it gets! there were some other very sweet sounds that afternoon and about as much weed as anyone could want just doing the rounds. it was good to see some bodies at the show for once and did they enjoy it! i had a hard time finding my way back to HQ afterwards tho!

AND THE DOOBIE GOES TO...

This Saturday we held the 2008 Doobie Awards at the Redeyed Fly in Austin, TX. It was a rip roarin’ party full of booze, buds, babes and bands that won’t soon be forgotten. Thanks to Blower, Dickie Moist and the OTC, The Lions, Sun Salutation, Pyrx and the legendary Blue Cheer for their amazing performances, Paul Bullock the Pot Poet, The Miss High Times girls Sarah, Nicole, Kimberly, Lauren and Ieisha, Dave from Gravitron, Texas NORML, Heath and all the cool folks at Redeyed Fly, and of course the HT crew for all their hard work and help in making the event a huge success.
