1:20 a.m. - Just got back from the Houston show tonight. What a great performance. They played for an hour and 45 minutes to a smallish but highly appreciative crowd. All three guys were also totally cool and accessible to fans both before and after the gig. I'll post a review tomorrow, but I'm beat and my ears are ringing. Plus - gotta get up at 6 for work. I'll be dragging ass, but it was totally worth it...

6 a.m. comes too goddamn early...
As I said, the show last night was great. The guys went on at about 10:45 and played until 12:30. Of course, since this was a Wednesday night, the club (which is not big anyway) had about 40 people in attendance at the start of the set. "There's not many of us here," Dickie said by way of opening. "So you better come up to the stage and get in our face because we're gonna get into yours. We're Blue Cheer, and this is what we DO!"
Standout numbers included "Parchman Farm," "Doctor Please" (with a long jam), "Just A Little Bit," "Maladjusted Child," and "I'm Gonna Get To You." They closed with "Rock Me Baby" leading into "The Hunter," which I was waiting for - and their version is so much better than Free's. I couldn't believe how fast Duck's fingers moved on the fretboard, and Paul was just pounding the shit out of his kit to the point of exhaustion.
I know that the only reason this Houston gig was booked is because they had two other dates in Austin, but for the eventual 60 people who were there, it was well worth it. Dickie even told me that he got to spend time with his daughter and grandchild in Dallas just before coming to town, and had "a great steak!"
All of the guys hung around for quite a bit after the set, talking to fans and signing stuff. One guy even had one of Dickie's solo CDs that he "paid a lot for" on eBay.
Good luck at the Doobie award, gentlemen. And thanks for the show!
