I only found out of the loss of Dickie at West Fest yesterday when Kathi McDonald told the crowd that he was missed and we would see him in the Rock and Roll Hall of Heaven one of these days. Dickie was one of my utmost favorite musicians from the first days of Vincebus Eruptum right up to What Doesn't Kill You. Heavy music and heavy, heavy, heavy loss!

good to hear the artists were giving him a nod and tribute then. did leigh say anything? his website has a notice up about dickie...

SATURDAY I WENT TO GOLDEN GATE PARK AND TALKED TO "BOOTS"--HE WAS THE PROMOTER FOR WEST FEST ON SUNDAY.
I ASKED HIM IF HE MIGHT SAY SOMETHING ABOUT DICKIE AND HE SAID THIS:
"ERIC I LOVE DICKIE . I WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR HIM. I CALLED HIM PERSONALLY AND ASKED HIM TO COME AND PLAY HERE AND HE SAID , " NO WAY MAN , YOU WOULD NEED TO PAY ME A LOT OF MONEY AND EXPENSES FOR ME TO PLAY " BOOTS WENT ON TO SAY , "THAT"S WHEN I KNEW DICKIE WAS DYING BECAUSE NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS WOULD DICKIE SAY SUCH A THING" ERIC LISTEN, IF I TOOK TIME OUT TO ANNOUNCE EVERY ONE OF US THAT HAS DIED IT WOULD TAKE HOURS "
I PERSONALLY THINK THAT WAS RIGHT ON THE MONEY ----BOOTS DID HIS USUAL GREAT JOB OF PROMOTING A WONDERFUL SHOW -----FOR FREE, FOR FREE, FOR FREE.
NOW, I PARKED MYSELF RIGHT NEXT TO THE TABLE WHERE THE MUSICIANS CHECKED IN SO I SAW THEM ALL AND TALKED WITH SOME --THE ONES THAT KNEW MY ASSOCIATION WITH BC WERE VERY KIND AND MOST ALL EXPRESSED THEIR FEELINGS REGARDING DICKIE---
THERE WAS A PICTURE OF DICKIE TAPED RIGHT ON THE TABLE WHERE EVERYONE COULD SEE IT AND EVERYBODY DID SEE IT.
WAY COOL , THE ENTIRE EVENT
PS- LEIGH WAS NOT THERE!

EIO--so how do you know those folks anyway---you must have been there --have I met you before ---please fill us all in as to your association with BC--if you might although I would naturally respect your wish for privacy--
The memories of The Angels is priceless as we became a visiting spot for many of them when in San Francisco --I never felt safer in my life--really . All at 122 Fillmore Street . San Francisco, truly classic stuff , my friend , thanks so very much.

Hey, does anyone know if he will be laid to rest in Germany, the bay area, or in ND? I hope it doesn't become a Morrison like shrine, but I'd like to pay my respects some day.

Dickie wished to be cremated . which is done and his ashes are with Corrina his daughter.
Dickie wanted some of the ashes to be placed in the Rhine river in Germany the rest somewhere in the Redwoods of Northern California, site to be determined by Corrina.

Maybe I should do an intro first... I don't know-
The news of Dickie passing gouged my heart. When Corrina and I were together and still living in Santa Rosa, we'd go visit Dickie and Kody Bear. Sweet potato fries and some nice herb were always on the menue.
Even after Corrina and I split up in '98, he'd still call me to see how I was doing. Never thought of him as a "father-inlaw" but as a friend. Dickie touched alot of lives, mine included-

The sun is just starting to break. It has been rainy, dreary and cold for about three weeks now, and it coincided with my reaction to the announcement of Dickie passing on. As other fans, I was kinda shocked and a bit angry on how we heard about the sad news. As other posts have been made, we get to hear some of the back stories and gain a bit of understanding of how things work in the music industry.
Ahhh, Dickie, you hid it well. I had no idea of your condition. You had seemed so fit, during the tour.... I was going to ask your secret! But that is the way, I would like to remember you, fit , giving your all on the stage and taking the time to meet with your fans, myself included.
You seemed at peace, regardless of the venue, playing alongside your friends and fellow musicians, Paul and Duck. I never knew this was going to be your last stand. We applaud your courage and present our appreciation for your last efforts of delivering the Blue Cheer sound one last time. You left us, but you left us your music, you left us the experience of hearing and seeing you perform, you left us with the memories of your stories and genuine affection for us, the fans. That's alot! We can never thank you enough. For you were the innovator. Consider how far ahead of your time, you, Leigh and Paul were. You were so far ahead, there could be no way to calculate, because it didn't matter. You were having fun and doing it the way you knew how. I have followed your music and your bandmates music since 1968. I was too young to see you then, but I got a chance to see you four times since 2006. So I got an idea of what I had missed. Speaking for myself and the other Chicago fans, who went to these four gigs starting with Intonation Fest, "Rock On Dickie...Rock On! Hope to see you in Rock 'n' Roll heaven some day!"
Still, for now, as Dickie sang in "When Two Spirits Touch", I "have to take the time to let it pass."
To Paul, Duck, Corrina, Ilka, Dickie's family and friends and fans , with the deepest of sympathies, I offer my condolences for your loss.

julian cope has a way with words, doesn't he? seems he borrowed a little from lester bangs, too...but despite all the backhanded compliments its a great read and a good tribute IMO,
