No
Ralph did not get to stretch out on Summertime Blues , Pretty stock most of the time . Dickie was great at giving all musicians their due but in this case no ---ralph pretty much was way in the background except on recordings.
The last three albums ending with Oh pleasant Hope were done because worldwide they averaged about 80,000 in sales per album which merited , in the eyes of Phillips records continuing . A lot of controversy weather they should have been done at all.
Money drives most of the music business. Without going into to much personal stuff, suffice to say Dickie was in "Poor Health"
back then and very difficult for him to carry the necessary weight , if you will. Many musicians were called in to support him and knowing that to try and get the sound of Leigh , Paul and Dickie then was impossible so we did the best , under the circumstances Believe me it was not easy and often very scary given the dark forces that were at play then, in many ways including a depressed city and very depressed musicians except for Norman Mayall who was the eternal optomist. My favorite was Oh Pleasant hope ! Pretty funny and cynical yet the title song I still love today----Rest At Ease a great song - In my opinion.
Red Weather sessions were the first ones that we, Leigh and myself were allowed to really produce what we wanted . English musicians were very supportive of us and helped push things along ---Ian Stewart especially of the Stones --Not only played on the album but loaned us the stones equipment including the blond Gretch drum set that Charlie Watts still playes ---
throw in Nicky Hopkins and Micky Waller and Kevin Westlake (RIP) and I was thrilled to work with these guys ----
Glen Johns was behind the scens, as well, giving me advice As seen on the credits ---Leigh hogged the credits and took full
advantage to produce and play and write and do it all----but I know different ----and still do with most of the BC experience as without Myself , Jerry , Gut , Peter , and Doug none of it would have happened. Back to England----Again , we were fighting the music establishment at Mercury/ Phillips because they wanted it all to them selves and we held out to produce it ourselves as well as master it ----Lou Reisner from Mercury essentially stole Rod Stewart from us and signed him thus Maggie May-etc.
Again Money -----Leigh was practicing with Him R. Wood , Pete Sears , but because of the rip off he ended up with Silver Metre. I essentially gave that band to Charlie Osborne who named Vin Cebes ...Biggest Problem with Red Weather was Leighs
low self image as far as singing ----I have said this before but the voices are mixed way to low and thus the album suffered
because they were just too low , period . Having written two songs and sung one I was thrilled to be in such exclusive company. We never had penny one from the companies for our efforts.
As far as musicians dying ----Janis never really accepted what happened to her ----her fame grew at an astounding rate and she like most of the others had newly found fame and no experience or help dealing with it ----very difficult -----
Really the reason for all the Deaths is-are the Arcane and very STUPID Drug Laws---they cause great people to Sleeze around and find them and also fans brought them to the musicians because they wanted to give them something -------Jerry Garcia included --- really a shame we still don't have these genius around --- I always wondered why "J" ie Jimmy , Janis , Jones , JIM
Dickie especially then Paul and Leigh are naturally survivors ---They never stopped long enough to wonder about theie fame
just accepted it ----ehty went through all the rest but it did not kill them except for some of the inate magic which seems to catapult musicians into a successful mode.
Anytime ,
Eric
