I was just wondering what the thoughts are as to Randy getting back into surf guitar as compared to his stoner rock guitar playing? Having seen him live @ Surf101 last year I was really pleased at his playing, and how well it fit in with the genre, I am not always a fan of his "rock" stuff. Don't get me wrong I am not being critical of Randy Holden as a guitar player, I just think his surf stuff is pretty f'n good and I am more than pleased that he's back out there on any stage playing again. In fact I wish all these guys (x-members of Blue Cheer) would be out there playing in any band... I kinda miss the rumble...

Man, it sure would be nice if more members would post. Not really sure what constitutes surf, but it is making a comeback these days, and it has to be an improvement over Progressive Rock. Surf is generally instrumental drenched with reverb....faster tempo than stoner rock. Dick Dale has probably done more to revive this genre than anybody else. Randy keeps saying to check him out if he is playing in your town. He has an awesome band, too. It wouldn't surprise me if the next offering Randy has in new music will include surf. Not sure if it would be exclusively surf. Everything depends on the current band. How long can it hold together? Can the band be maintained long enough to tour? That is the $1000 question. One thing Randy mentioned is that the original tracks he did in Fender IV were sped up by the recording engineer. So now when he plays these songs they are in a lower register. I wish Randy would record more surf songs. He only has a handful. However, these handful of songs are highly revered in the surf music community

I have always been amazed and impressed at how eclectic his styles have been. Especially after he took a 25 year hiatus from playing and then picked up as playing if he never stopped. I will always have a soft spot for the POP2 stuff but love the surf music he is currently playing as well as his other styles (I found myself liking his acoustic album a lot more than I expected to, good thing I managed to snag the last copy!). I gotta admit though, I was a bit disappointed with the BC covers on his last album as he didn't play any guitar solos on them! I guess the mystery of the late 1968/69 tour will live on. At any rate, I hope he tours the East coast soon....

I'm wondering if he will play this years Surf101 festival here in SoCal next week. has anyone heard anything? I will be going again this year. Seeing him last year was a pleasant surprise but it was not the same band as he used in Italy.

Randy was not invited to Surf 101 this year , while he was looking forward to doing it . The lame excuse Jeff gave was that they never have a band two years in a row and he would rather have cover bands come in. Oh and btw Randy has done only 5 surf songs. It is Jeff's pet project/event, so he can do whatever he wants, but I say "Give 'em 'ell!"
