Are you allowed to vote for yourself? Remember, it was rumoured that I made a guest appearance once.

Duck has proven to everyone this last tour that he 'brings it' live where BC is at it's best - he's earned the the number one slot for sure!

With regards EIO`s post, perhaps the poll should have read `Who is your favourite Blue Cheer guitarist based on who you have seen play?`Most of you have only seen Duck play. EIO has had the privilege of seeing some of the others. What about those who have not seen Blue Cheer play live, and have only the albums from which to decide on. Should also one not consider that Duck is the only guitarist not to have contributed to the Blue Cheer song list lyrically? I have nothing but the greatest respect for every musician who has contributed to Blue Cheer over the years, but I think that the original question is meant to be biased against a certain individual based on recent posts on other threads. Take away `Duck` MacDonald and then answer the question!

Well Feathered, since you put it that way...I guess if we take out Duck from this list, my runner-up would have to be Leigh simply because he was the guitarist that helped create the original BC sound. I've never heard Randy, Bruce, Jerre, Rubin, or Gary live so I can only base my opinions on what they recorded. I have seen videos of all the rest. I like Tony & Didi a lot because they did capture the rawness of the sound and added some cool stuff (such as Didi's bottleneck in Parchment Farm). But the psychedelic part was missing and a lot of the music was a slight bit too metal. Don't get me wrong they still rocked. And after seeing Leigh live today (he really does not have it anymore) , I'd rather have either of them in the band if Duck wasn't playing with BC.
I like Duck the best now not because I've seen him the most and because he is a really cool dude, but because he now plays in the style of the original Vincebus-era sound but does so a lot better than Leigh ever did. I've seen/heard the band jam further out into the ozone on this last tour than I ever heard them do on any previous live recording (and I've heard a lot!). Not to mention, Duck didn't always play like this live. A few years back he got a lot of shit on this board (some from me sorry to say) because he played a bit too "Megaforce records- like". Seeing him evolve to become the ultimate BC guitarist makes it all the more kick-ass!

FBL... I totally agree with every word in your post, I was in Golden Gate park and saw Leigh last summer...he is definetly NOT the same. Duck has improved so much I can't believe it...not so much in chops, he's always been a decent string wrangler...but in Blue Cheer style and focus... he's figured out the concept and seamlessly fit himself into the formula. I also saw Tony with the band and they were pretty cool too, but more metal than they should be. I will say this about Leigh...and this may change soon...as far as recordings go, Leigh's work on 1 and 2 are the best ...I am awaiting the new recording to see what the boys have cooked up for us this time..it should be great!

These kind of questions are always tough to answer. Like who is your favorite guitarist of the Yardbirds? (i.e. Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck or Jimmy Page?...where my answer would be Jeff Beck!) You have to consider everything regardless of what the guy did only within the context of the band. Otherwise everything is skewed.
So it is the same with Blue Cheer. All of the guitarists in the poll are very good, better than average. And I would not use this poll to pursuade any fan or fans relatively new to the band from not checking all of them out.
With that said, Randy Holden is one of the greats. His bad breaks in the business leave him relatively unknown to the "outside" world. And he is one of my favorite guitarist / songwriter / singer period. His playing continues to carry on his past music to distant sunns.
Leigh Stephens was one of the greats. Vincebus Eruptum is a mind crushing album. Red Weather had its moments also. Now he avoids that kind of music.
Duck MacDonald could (will) be one of the greats. After seeing him play live, I can't wait to hear future material from him. He is beginning to carry the mantle of past guitarists that went before him pretty well. This is exciting. His efforts are most appreciated, and that seems to be reflected in the poll above.
