world war III has been on people's minds since the end of world war II - that's way before 1968! and though no one could have predicted exactly what has gone on in the last 60-odd years, the current economic "meltdown" has been on the cards since about the same time....in 68 a lot of bands were very politically oriented, not in a party-politics way, but political all the same...

Hey, Lourde! It`s not just about Pink Floyd. It`s about everybody else that Gypsyball posts links to. Just about every time you go on this Message Board now, there is yet another YouTube screen stuck in yer face under Gypsyball`s monicker. I`m just asking him to give it a rest, and maybe if he does, then I`ll give him a rest as well, and that`ll be one less Terence Belcher for him to worry about.

Easing into the new year as 2008 still leaves a bad vibe. .... Listening to some cds, Blue Cheer, Randy Holden, Fleetwood Mac......that Peter Green was one hell of a guitarist.....Any Peter Green fans here? Anybody pick up his Splinter Group work? Wondering what Holden would do with a song like The Green Manalishi or for that matter Oh Well... Wonder if Duck ever considered covering a Peter Green tune.....

Why do you refer to him by his surname when we all know that you and him are supposed to be bosom buddies, or do you refer to all your closest friends by their surnames only? Or maybe there is an ulterior motive to just referring to him as `Holden`. Maybe you think that by doing so, all the Randy Holden haters on this Message Board will be your friend as well, by just referring to him like that. I prefer to call my friends, be they close or distant, by their Christian names first, or using their whole name, but never....never.....just by their surnames. Surely calling someone by their surname only is somewhat derogatory, like he was an asshole or something. I mean, you are allowed to say Randy Holden on this Message Board. He is, after all, part of the Blue Cheer family, and that is what this Message Board is all about. You aren`t allowed to say Frank Marino here. In fact, you aren`t allowed to say Frank Marino anywhere. But you are allowed to say Randy Holden.

I’d certainly agree that Peter Green is one of the greats. The first professional band gig I ever went to was the 3 guitar line up of Fleetwood Mac, just after Danny Kirwan had joined...a great start to gig going. They were still concentrating on the blues then. His playing on numbers like Love That Burns, The Supernatural (with John Mayall) Black Magic Woman and Green Manalishi still sends a tingle up my spine. It’s a real shame that his mental health problems took away so much of his power and confidence as a performer and writer. I saw him play (with Kolors) in 1984 after a couple of low key comeback albums, and he really didn’t seem well enough to be on stage. His guitar was turned down so low as to be almost inaudible (the band had a singer and another guitarist who did most of the work) one of the other band members did all the introductions and, although he did a few quiet vocals, Peter seemed pretty out of it really...like a tribute band with the ghost of Peter Green in attendance. Everyone was willing him to succeed, but he clearly wasn’t ready. Things were better when I saw him with the Splinter Group a few years back, but he still seemed more like a special guest in his own band than fully functioning member, and though his playing was much stronger (he still has that sensitive touch and sometimes ethereal sound) the material was fairly standard and not particularly inspiring blues fare and the rest of the band were competent but unremarkable. I didn’t investigate their albums. As regards covering his material (didn’t Gary Moore have a go?) I think that Green has already done such definitive versions it’s hardly worth it for most people. I still prefer Fleetwood Mac’s original Black Magic Woman to Santana’s ... a case of less is more. As it’s a slow start to the year here’s a few free downloads that might possibly be of interest to those that haven’t heard them: Dragonflychrisgoesrocks.blogspot.com/2007/11/dragonfly-dragonfly-great-us-guitar.htmlThis album was contemporary with the Kak album, I remember John Peel playing both on his show during the same period and having to decide which of two expensive imports to buy first (the Kak won of course). Dragonfly doesn’t have quite the range or quality of Kak’s LP, but there’s some rousing guitar and something about it (maybe the drumming) does remind me of Kak. The site here: www.headheritage.co.uk/unsung/review/1253talks about similarities with early Blue Cheer guitarists, but I think that’s stretching things a bit. Firebirds/31 Flavorsspendingloudnight.wordpress.com/2008/01/18/light-my-hair-on-fire/www.megaupload.com/?d=3LDNLPEOI think there is some definite Blue Cheer influence on some of the tracks here, which come from two 60’s albums recorded for a cheapo supermarket label, cashing in on the power trios of the day. The anonymous musicians have clearly listened to the early albums of Hendrix, Blue Cheer and Cream in roughly equal measure (together with the Bluesbreakers “Beano” album) before being given their two hours in the studio, tasked with producing a couple of albums worth of power trio material at minimal cost. If you can imagine a parallel 60’s universe where the Beatles have been exchanged for the Pete Best Combo and Audrey Hepburn looks as if her grandmother might have been Miss Piggy, Firebirds/31 Flavors is a kind of amalgam of what Blue Cheer, Hendrix and Cream would have sounded like there. It’s crass and often laughably inept...but strangely enjoyable!...for a couple of times at least. You can also play spot the track as recognisable tunes have been cunningly re-titled, presumably to avoid royalties. Finally Kristyl: chrisgoesrocks.blogspot.com/2007/11/req-kristyl-selftitled-very-rare-us.htmlDescribed as a “christian rock group” in the write up here, but I’d not read that before and to be honest I’ve known the album for around a quarter century and never really noticed...maybe I’m just not a lyrics person...or maybe the great, melodic guitar and the good tunes preoccupy the mind. I hate that sharebee link that is used a couple of times on the above sites. Best to right click on the link to rapidshare or mega upload as soon as sharebee opens, copy the rapidshare url from properties, and paste it direct into the browser having closed sharebee...otherwise you can get a swarm of really persistent pop-ups. Happy new year

That is awesome news! Thanks for posting this Twang! For a brief time, I used to play in a blues band with Robert Sharples here in Jersey. It never really took off but me & him used to go nuts whenever we played Parchment Farm!

Wow...how strange is that. Robert was just talking about you the other day, just another one of the daily strange coincidences in the strange world of Sainte Anthony's Fyre.

Wow, funny you should mention that, your like the 10th person that's said that to me this week, Sainte Anthony's Fyre warming up for Blue Cheer, I'm all for it, that would be a fun show.
Sainte Anthony's Fyre is rehearsing this summer for some late summer and fall shows with a live show to be recorded for Anthology Recordings and Live CD, and the release a new CD in early 2010.
What we should do is get 4 or 5 bands together and do some big venue shows together and promote it as a "The psychedelic hard rock Fest" Now that would be a blast and a half!

Monster Magnet is an awesome modern acid/stoner rock band out there today. The songs "Baby Götterdämerung" "See You In Hell" "Space Lord" and "Superjudge" are my favorite songs by them.
